SCOUTED BY THE BRUINS AT AGE FOURTEEN:
Doug was scouted by Harold Cotton who was Chief Scout for the Boston Bruins on a night when Doug’s team won and he was the star player. Doug received a phone call from Mr. Cotton the following day and made arrangements to meet him in Sudbury, Ontario where he signed an agreement ,obligating him to attend training camp for the Barrie Flyers in Southern Ontario in the fall of 1950. (The Barrie Flyers were an affiliate of the Boston Bruins.) Attending Doug’s hockey game was a memorable night for Mr. Cotton because he almost lost his life on the icy roads of Northern Ontario on his return trip home that evening. He often looked back on that trip not only because of the accident but because Doug went on to a long and successful hockey career in the NHL..
